Goshuincho “Seirenge Ryūō” This goshuincho features a design based on the original sketch created for the ceiling painting at Kutoku-in Temple in Kai City, Yamanashi. It was produced in collaboration with Marui Paper Shop, a company that creates protective charms and sacred paper items for temples and shrines throughout Japan, and is sold at religious sites across the country. The background uses Kōrozen, a traditional color long associated with dignity and refinement in Japan. With its calm and elegant appearance, the design is intended to be suitable for people of all ages. I hope this goshuincho will become a companion for your temple and shrine visits, preserving the memories of each journey. About Seirenge Ryūō Seirenke Ryūō is said to be the eighth of the Eight Great Dragon Kings and to dwell in a pond where blue lotus flowers bloom. When I read descriptions in Buddhist scriptures of ponds in the Pure Land, glowing from their depths and filled with lotus flowers of five colors, an image gradually appeared in my mind. I imagined Seirenke Ryūō slowly raising his head from the water and quietly looking toward us. That is the figure I painted. Since ancient times, people have prayed to dragon deities for rain during times of drought. Rain nourishes fields and plants and sustains life, but when too much falls, rivers can overflow and cause great destruction. I began to imagine Seirenke Ryūō as a powerful and dignified presence — almost like a commander among dragon deities — silently observing the lives of people and guiding the dragons of different regions to bring the rain that is needed. Because of that, I pictured him as an especially large dragon, yet one with a calm and gentle gaze. In the painting, he watches over the world in complete stillness, surrounded by soft morning mist illuminated by light rising from the depths of the pond. Where I live in Hayakawa, Yamanashi, I often see the mountains wrapped in morning mist and glowing in the first light of day. In the quiet of early morning, the mountains sometimes seem to me as though they are slowly breathing, gently embracing all the creatures still asleep within them. As I painted Seirenge Ryūō, I felt that his presence overlapped with those mountains. ************************* Goshuincho “Seirenge Ryūō” ★ Large, easy-to-use size: 180 × 120 mm ★ Includes a name label for writing your name ★ Includes an explanatory card about Seirenke Ryūō
